Little Hands, Living Things: Exploring Nature with Our Youngest Gardeners

There is something quietly magical about watching a two-year-old hold a freshly picked herb for the very first time — turning it over in their tiny hands, bringing it close to their nose, eyes wide with wonder at something so small and so alive.

This is learning in its purest form. And at NCC Santa Clara, it happens every single day.

The Garden as Classroom

Our 2-3 year old class has discovered one of the best classrooms on campus — and it doesn't have four walls. Our garden spaces give our youngest learners the freedom to slow down, tune in, and connect with the living world around them in ways that no worksheet or flashcard ever could.

What unfolds in those quiet moments among the plants is nothing short of remarkable.

What's Really Growing Out There

A Beginning Awareness of Living Things For toddlers, the concept that plants grow, change, and need care is a profound one. Holding a herb they watched sprout from the soil connects them to the cycle of life in a deeply tangible way — planting seeds of curiosity and wonder that will grow right alongside them.

Learning to Explore with Their Senses The crinkle of a leaf. The sharp, fresh scent of basil. The cool, damp feeling of soil beneath their fingers. The garden is a full sensory experience, and for toddlers who learn primarily through their senses, it is pure gold.

Feeling Calm and Relaxed Outdoors Research consistently shows that time in nature reduces stress and promotes emotional regulation in young children. There is something about fresh air, open space, and green growing things that settles a toddler in a way that is both immediate and lasting.

Building Confidence Through Exploration Every time a child reaches into the garden and discovers something new — a ladybug, a new sprout, a fragrant herb — they experience the quiet thrill of capability. I found that. I did that. That sense of competence builds the confidence that carries children forward in every area of learning.

Connecting with Caregivers During Discovery "Look what I found!" Garden exploration naturally creates moments of shared joy between children and the adults who love them. These connections — built in the middle of something real and wonder-filled — are the foundation of secure, trusting relationships.

Faith in the Garden

At NCC, we believe the natural world is one of God's greatest gifts to us — and to our children. Introducing our youngest learners to the beauty of living things is one of the most organic ways we can point them toward the Creator behind it all.

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." — Psalm 24:1

Come See It for Yourself
